How to Buy an Engagement Ring Without Her Knowing
Buying an engagement ring as a complete surprise is one of the most romantic things you can do — and one of the most logistically tricky. Between getting the ring size right, managing deliveries, hiding bank statements, and actually pulling off the proposal, there's a lot to navigate. Here's how to do it smoothly.
Step 1: Get Her Ring Size (Without Asking)
This is the hardest part for most people. A few approaches that work:
Borrow a ring she wears on her ring finger. Take it to a jeweller to be measured, or trace the inside circumference on paper. Make sure you borrow one she wears on the correct finger — people often wear rings on different fingers in different sizes.
Ask a close friend or family member. If she's close to her mother, sister, or best friend, they may already know — or can find out subtly.
Use a sizing guide while she sleeps. There are printable ring sizer tools (available on our ring size guide) that you can place next to a ring she owns to estimate the size. Not foolproof, but it gets you in the right ballpark.
If you genuinely can't get the size: the Australian average ring size is around a size N (US 7). Buying slightly larger is preferable to smaller — rings are easier to size down than up.
Step 2: Manage the Finances Quietly
If you share a bank account, a sudden large transaction will likely be noticed. Options: use a separate personal account, use a credit card she doesn't have visibility into, or pay in instalments over time. Most jewellers — including us — are happy to discuss payment flexibility.
Step 3: Manage the Delivery
If you're ordering online, ship to your workplace or a trusted family member's address. Make sure you're home or available to intercept the delivery if sending to your home address. Most jewellers use discreet, unmarked packaging.
Step 4: Hide the Ring
Classic spots: inside a jacket pocket, inside a shoe in the back of the wardrobe, at a family member's place. Avoid jewellery boxes — she'll spot the distinctive shape immediately. Use a plain box or bag nested inside something unrelated.
Step 5: The Proposal Itself
All of that effort — and the proposal lasts 30 seconds. Make those seconds count. Our full proposal planning guide covers timing, location, and making it memorable.
