Earlier than most people think. For a made-to-order ring, you need to account for production lead time. At Una Diamond, our lead time is six weeks from order to delivery. That means:
- Proposing at Christmas? Order by early November.
- Proposing on Valentine's Day? Order by early January.
- Proposing on an anniversary? Count back six weeks and add a buffer.

Should you choose the ring alone or together?
Choose alone (the surprise): The classic approach. Requires a good read of your partner's style. The ring can always be resized or swapped if needed. The proposal moment is maximally romantic.
Choose together: Increasingly common, especially for couples who see the ring as a shared investment. You can still make the proposal a surprise — with a placeholder ring, a ring box with a note, or simply the moment and the words.
