About lab-grown diamonds
What are lab-grown diamonds?
They're diamonds grown in a lab rather than mined from the ground. Growers recreate the heat and pressure (or the carbon-rich conditions) that form diamonds naturally, and the carbon crystallises into a diamond over a few weeks.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is made of the same carbon, in the same crystal structure, as a mined diamond. It has the same hardness and sparkle, and a jeweller can't tell them apart without specialist equipment.
Can lab-grown diamonds be certified?
Yes. They're graded by the same independent labs and on the same scales as mined diamonds. Every Una diamond comes with an IGI report covering its cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
Can lab-grown diamonds be customised?
Absolutely. You can design your ring from scratch in our ring builder, choosing the stone shape, setting, band and metal. If you'd like to change one of our existing designs, add your requests to the notes on your order and our team will help.
How do I care for lab-grown diamond jewellery?
The same way you'd care for any diamond ring. Soak it in warm water with a little mild soap, brush gently around the setting with a soft toothbrush, then rinse and pat dry. Store it on its own so it doesn't scratch, or get scratched by, other pieces.
Lab-grown vs mined diamonds
How are lab-grown diamonds different from mined diamonds?
Where they're made. A mined diamond formed underground over millions of years; a lab-grown diamond formed in a controlled environment over a few weeks. Once they're cut and polished, they're the same material.
How do lab-grown diamonds compare in quality to mined diamonds?
They're graded on exactly the same scales, so a lab-grown diamond with a given cut, colour and clarity grade will look the same as a mined diamond with those grades. Quality comes down to the individual stone, not where it grew.
Are lab-grown diamonds more affordable than mined diamonds?
Generally, yes. A lab-grown diamond usually costs considerably less than a mined diamond of the same size and quality, which is why many people choose a larger stone or a higher grade than they'd planned.
Ethics and sustainability
Are lab-grown diamonds ethical?
They avoid the problems tied to diamond mining, like land clearing and the risk of stones coming from conflict areas. That's a big part of why we chose them.
Are lab-grown diamonds better for the environment?
They don't involve digging up land, so there's no mine site, habitat loss or waste rock. Growing a diamond does use a lot of electricity, though, so the footprint depends on how the grower is powered. Many are moving to renewable energy.
Are lab-grown diamonds sustainable?
Compared with mining, we think so. There's no mine and no disturbed land, and the supply chain is much shorter. The part still improving is energy use, which is why it's worth knowing how a grower is powered.
