Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds: What Each Process Involves

If you've been thinking about an engagement ring and care about where your diamond comes from, you're asking the right question. Mining and lab production are different processes with different footprints, and it's worth knowing what each one actually does.

What diamond mining involves

Traditional diamond mining displaces enormous volumes of earth. To extract a single carat of mined diamond, miners move roughly 250 tonnes of rock and earth. The process creates open-pit mines visible from space, disrupts local ecosystems, and in some regions has been linked to soil erosion, deforestation and contamination of local waterways.

Energy use is significant too. Mining operations run heavy diesel equipment around the clock, and the transportation chain, from mine to sorting facility to cutting centre to wholesale to retailer, adds emissions at every step.

How lab-grown diamonds are made instead

Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled facilities using one of two processes: CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature). Both replicate the conditions that create diamonds underground, but do so without any excavation. No mines, no displaced communities, no debris fields.

The energy profile varies by facility. Some labs run on solar or hydroelectric power, others don't. What's consistent is the absence of excavation.

Are lab-grown diamonds certified?

Centre stones of one carat and up come with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate, which grades the diamond on cut, clarity, colour and carat, the same four criteria used to certify mined diamonds. IGI sets that one carat threshold, not us. The certificate doesn't rank a stone as better or lesser. It tells you what you have, verified independently.

The value question

Lab-grown diamonds cost less than a comparable mined stone. That's not because they're inferior. It's because the supply chain is shorter and the production process is more controllable. For buyers, it often means the same budget stretches to a larger diamond, a finer setting, or both.
