Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Are They Really the Same?

Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Are They Really the Same?

If you've been shopping for an engagement ring recently, you've almost certainly come across lab-grown diamonds. And if you're anything like most buyers, your first question was probably: are they actually the same as real diamonds?

The short answer is yes — chemically, physically, and optically, lab-grown diamonds are identical to natural diamonds. But the longer answer is more nuanced, and worth understanding before you spend thousands of dollars on a ring.

What Makes a Diamond a Diamond?

A diamond is defined by its chemical composition: pure carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure. That structure is what gives diamonds their extraordinary hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), their exceptional light refraction, and that signature sparkle.

Lab-grown diamonds have that exact same composition and crystal structure. They're not diamond simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite — they are diamonds. The only difference is where they formed: underground over billions of years, or inside a laboratory over a few weeks.

How Do They Compare on Quality?

Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the same 4 Cs as natural diamonds: cut, colour, clarity, and carat. They're certified by the same institutions — IGI and GIA — and can achieve the same grades. In fact, because the growth process is controlled, it's often easier to produce lab-grown diamonds with fewer inclusions than their mined counterparts.

At Una Diamond, every stone we use is IGI certified, so you know exactly what you're getting.

What About Price?

This is where lab-grown and natural diamonds diverge significantly. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50–70% less than a comparable natural diamond. That means you can get a larger, higher-quality stone for the same budget — or simply spend less and redirect that money elsewhere.

Do They Look Different?

No. Even trained gemologists can't tell the difference with the naked eye. The stones have the same refractive index, the same fire, the same brilliance. The only way to distinguish them is with specialist equipment that detects trace elements from the growing process — and even then, both are real diamonds.

Should You Choose Lab-Grown?

For most buyers in Australia in 2026, the answer is yes. You get the same diamond, the same look, the same quality — and you keep more of your money. The only reasons to choose natural are sentimental preference or if you're buying specifically as a long-term financial investment.
