Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Ethical? A Sustainability Guide for Australian Buyers
Ethics and sustainability have become central considerations for Australian consumers — and the jewellery industry is no exception. If you're considering a lab-grown diamond engagement ring, you're likely asking whether it's actually the more ethical choice. Here's what the evidence says.
The Problem with Mined Diamonds
Diamond mining has a complicated history. The term "blood diamond" (or conflict diamond) refers to diamonds mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict against governments. While the Kimberley Process — an international certification scheme — was introduced in 2003 to address this, critics have long argued it doesn't go far enough, failing to cover diamonds mined under oppressive labour conditions or environmental destruction.
Beyond conflict, large-scale open-pit diamond mining causes significant environmental damage: land disruption, habitat destruction, water table impacts, and substantial carbon emissions from heavy machinery and transport.
The Case for Lab-Grown
Lab-grown diamonds sidestep the conflict diamond problem entirely — their origin is traceable and known. For buyers who want certainty about where their stone comes from, lab-grown is the clearest option.
On environmental impact, the picture is more nuanced. Lab-grown diamonds require significant energy to produce — particularly HPHT diamonds. However, many producers are increasingly powered by renewable energy, and the land use and water impacts are far smaller than open-pit mining. A 2019 study found that CVD diamond production using renewable energy has a considerably lower carbon footprint than mined diamonds.
The Nuanced Reality
Lab-grown isn't automatically "perfect" from an environmental standpoint — it depends heavily on the energy source used in production. But for most buyers, it represents a meaningfully more traceable, more transparent, and often more sustainable choice.
All stones used at Una Diamond are IGI certified with full origin traceability.
