The Solitaire

A solitaire engagement ring features a single diamond, held by prongs (typically four or six), on a plain or lightly detailed band. Nothing competes with the centre stone. The design is defined by restraint and confidence — it says the diamond speaks for itself.

Solitaires are the most timeless of all engagement ring styles. A well-made solitaire in solid gold or platinum, with a well-cut diamond, is a ring that will look beautiful in 50 years. They're also the most versatile — a solitaire can be dressed up or down, stacked with wedding bands, and worn with everything.

From a value perspective, a solitaire lets you put the maximum portion of your budget into the centre stone itself. Without side stones or a halo adding cost, a larger or higher-quality diamond is more accessible.

The Halo

A halo setting surrounds the centre diamond with a ring of smaller pavé-set diamonds. The effect is significant: the centre stone appears larger, the ring has more overall sparkle, and the look is distinctly more elaborate and glamorous. Halo settings are particularly flattering on smaller centre stones — a 0.7ct diamond in a well-designed halo can appear comparable in size to a 1.0ct+ solitaire.

The trade-off is maintenance. The small pavé diamonds in a halo can loosen over time and require periodic re-tipping of prongs. The setting also has a more intricate profile that some people find visually busy.

Halos have seen the most popularity with cushion and oval cut centre stones, where the surrounding diamonds echo and amplify the shape's softness.

Which to Choose?

Choose a solitaire if your partner values timeless minimalism and wants the diamond to do all the talking. Choose a halo if they love drama, sparkle, and a ring that looks larger than its carat weight suggests.
