The trade-off is maintenance. Pavé settings need periodic checking. The tiny beads that hold the stones wear down over years of daily wear, and small diamonds can loosen and fall out if not maintained. A reputable jeweller will service a pavé ring every few years to re-tip any worn prongs.
Channel setting
A channel setting holds diamonds between two parallel rails of metal, with no individual prongs. The diamonds sit in a protected groove, which makes channel settings secure and smooth, with nothing to catch on clothing or snag skin. Channel set diamonds tend to be rectangular cuts, baguettes or princess cuts, sitting flush along the band.
Bezel setting
A bezel setting uses a continuous rim of metal to hold the diamond, wrapping its entire circumference. It's the most secure setting for active lifestyles: the stone is protected on all sides and can't loosen the way a prong-set stone theoretically can. Bezel settings look sleek and modern, and work particularly well with round and oval centre stones.
