Made-to-Order Engagement Rings in Australia: What to Expect

If you've never bought a made-to-order piece of jewellery before, the process can feel a little opaque. What actually happens between placing your order and receiving the ring? How long does it take? What decisions do you need to make? Here's a transparent walkthrough of what to expect.

Step 1: Choosing Your Design

Most made-to-order jewellers — including Una Diamond — offer a range of designs you can personalise, rather than asking you to design from a blank page. You choose a ring style you love, then specify your preferences: the metal (18K white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum), the diamond shape, and the approximate carat weight.

If you have inspiration images, send them. If you have a specific diamond in mind, mention it. The more information you share, the better the team can guide you.

Step 2: Diamond Selection

Once you've chosen a design and confirmed your preferences, the jeweller will source an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond that meets your specifications. You'll typically be presented with options at different price points, with details of each stone's cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

Step 3: Order Confirmation

Once you've confirmed the design and diamond, the order is placed. At this point a deposit is typically required — usually 50% of the ring's value. The balance is due on or before delivery.

Step 4: Production

The ring is then handcrafted by our team in Australia. This involves casting the setting in your chosen metal, setting the diamond, and finishing and polishing the ring. At Una Diamond, this process typically takes six weeks from order confirmation.

Step 5: Quality Check and Delivery

Before dispatch, every ring goes through a quality check — prongs, setting security, polish, and finish are all inspected. Your ring is then packaged and delivered to your door, fully insured in transit.

Aftercare

Your relationship with your jeweller doesn't end at delivery. A quality made-to-order jeweller will service your ring over its lifetime — checking prongs, cleaning, and resizing as needed.
