How to Resize an Engagement Ring: What You Need to Know
Engagement rings sometimes need resizing — whether because the original size was an estimate, because finger size changes over time due to weight fluctuation or temperature, or because the ring was inherited and doesn't fit the new owner. Resizing is a standard jewellery service, but there are some important things to understand before you go ahead.
How Ring Resizing Works
For making a ring larger: the jeweller cuts the band, adds a section of the same metal to increase the circumference, then solders the ring closed and re-polishes the join. For making a ring smaller: the jeweller removes a section of the band, rejoins the ends, and polishes the join. A skilled jeweller should be able to make the join invisible in most cases.
How Much Can a Ring Be Resized?
Most rings can be safely resized by one to two sizes in either direction without significant structural risk. Beyond two sizes, the risk of distorting the ring's shape, weakening the metal, or causing aesthetic changes increases. Some rings — particularly those with intricate all-around patterning, full eternity bands, or certain stone configurations — cannot be resized at all without damaging the design.
What Can't Be Resized?
Full eternity rings (diamonds or gemstones set all the way around the band) typically cannot be sized up because there's no plain metal to add to. Some titanium or tungsten rings also cannot be resized due to the hardness of the metal — jewellers cannot cut and rejoin these materials. At Una Diamond, we make our rings in 18K gold and platinum, both of which can be resized by a skilled jeweller.
Does Resizing Affect the Ring?
When done by a skilled jeweller, resizing should leave no visible trace. The join should be invisible and the ring should look identical to how it looked before. If the ring is going up by more than two sizes, there's a small risk of subtle visible changes — a reputable jeweller will tell you this upfront.
How Long Does Resizing Take?
Most resizing takes two to five business days at a quality jeweller. Rush services are sometimes available for an additional fee.
