How to Find Out Your Partner's Ring Size Without Asking

Getting the ring size right is one of the most nerve-wracking parts of planning a surprise proposal. Too small and it won't go on. Too large and it slides off. Here are the most effective approaches — no awkward conversations required.

Method 1: Borrow an Existing Ring

The most accurate method. Find a ring your partner wears on their ring finger (specifically the ring finger of their left hand, if you're proposing with a ring for that finger). Borrow it without them noticing, take it to a jeweller to measure, then return it. Most jewellers can measure a ring in under a minute.

Important: make sure you're borrowing the right ring. People often wear different sizes on different fingers. A ring from the right hand or the middle finger will give you the wrong size.

Method 2: Ask a Trusted Friend or Family Member

Her best friend, sister, or mother may already know. If not, they can find out naturally — a shopping trip, a casual try-on, or a browse of jewellery stores with a purpose. This is a low-risk approach if you trust the person not to say anything.

Method 3: Pay Attention to Context Clues

Has she tried on jewellery recently and mentioned what size she is? Has she referenced a friend's ring fitting her well? People often mention ring sizes in passing without realising it. It's worth thinking back.

Method 4: Strategic Conversation

Some people are comfortable with slightly less total surprise. You might mention that a colleague recently proposed, "and apparently getting the size wrong was a nightmare — do you know what size you are?" A natural, low-pressure conversation that many partners are happy to answer without reading too much into it.

If All Else Fails: Estimate

The average Australian ring size for women is approximately a size N (US size 7). If your partner has average-sized hands, this is a reasonable starting point. Buy slightly larger rather than smaller — a ring that can be sized down is easier to work with than one that needs to be sized up. Most rings can be resized one to two sizes in either direction.
