Engagement Ring vs Wedding Ring: What's the Difference?
For many people buying their first engagement ring, the terminology around rings is a source of genuine confusion. Engagement ring, wedding ring, wedding band, eternity ring — these terms get used interchangeably and inconsistently. Here's a clear breakdown of what each term means and how they relate to each other.
The Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is given at the time of proposal — it marks the intention to marry. It's typically a feature ring: the most visually prominent of the set, usually featuring a centre diamond or gemstone in a dedicated setting. This is the ring we design and make at Una Diamond.
The engagement ring is typically worn on the ring finger of the left hand — though this tradition varies by culture. In Australia, the left-hand ring finger is conventional for most people.
The Wedding Ring (Wedding Band)
A wedding ring (often called a wedding band) is exchanged during the wedding ceremony itself. It's typically simpler than the engagement ring — often a plain or diamond-set band in matching metal. The wedding band is a symbol of the marriage, while the engagement ring is a symbol of the promise to marry.
After the wedding, most people wear both rings together, stacked on the same finger. The wedding band typically sits below (closer to the knuckle) or above (closer to the hand) the engagement ring — personal preference and ring design both influence this.
The Eternity Ring
An eternity ring is typically given as a gift to mark a significant anniversary, the birth of a child, or another major milestone. It's usually a full or half eternity band — diamonds or gemstones set all the way around, or halfway around, the band. It's worn stacked with the engagement and wedding ring.
