Engagement Ring Insurance Australia: What You Need to Know
An engagement ring is a significant purchase — and like any significant asset, it's worth protecting. Ring insurance in Australia is more accessible and affordable than most people realise, and it covers scenarios your existing home and contents policy may not. Here's what you need to know.
Does Your Home and Contents Policy Cover Your Ring?
Possibly — but probably not fully. Most standard home and contents policies include "portable valuables" cover for jewellery, but with a per-item limit that may be well below the value of your ring. Check your policy's schedule: if your ring is worth $8,000 and your per-item portable valuables limit is $3,000, you have a $5,000 gap.
Home and contents policies also typically cover theft and fire damage, but may exclude accidental damage — a stone falling out, a prong breaking, or a ring being lost are often excluded from standard policies.
Dedicated Jewellery Insurance
Specialist jewellery insurance policies cover: theft, accidental damage, loss (including dropping a ring down a drain), and sometimes even mysterious disappearance (where the item simply can't be found). The premiums are typically 1–2% of the ring's insured value annually — so for a $6,000 ring, that's $60–120 per year.
Providers in Australia that offer specialist jewellery cover include Jewellers Association of Australia affiliated insurers and some general insurers with specialist portable items cover.
What You'll Need to Get Cover
Most insurers require a formal valuation from a qualified jeweller or valuer — this is separate from your purchase receipt, though your receipt and certificate documentation will support the valuation. At Una Diamond, your IGI certificate and purchase documentation serve as the foundation for any insurance valuation.
When to Insure
Ideally, insure the ring as soon as you receive it — before the proposal if possible, as loss during or immediately after a proposal isn't as rare as you'd think. At minimum, insure it within the first week of ownership.
Keeping Your Insurance Up to Date
Diamond and gold prices fluctuate. Have your ring professionally revalued every three to five years and update your cover accordingly — you don't want to be underinsured if the replacement cost has risen.
